Homeschooled Voices Book Award 2026
For a more detailed explanation of the award process, view this document:
This is a project put together with the goal of spreading awareness about the representation of homeschooling in literature. Why does this matter? There are a couple of reasons. First, homeschooled students and alumni may benefit from reading stories that are similar to their own. This could bring them comfort from seeing their own experiences represented, inspiration from characters overcoming challenges, and even just hope that it is possible to have a decent life with a non-traditional schooling experience. Second, representation could help non-homeschoolers have empathy and understanding for the experiences of homeschooled students. With the increase in homeschooling and continuing debate over regulations (at least in the U.S.), it would be beneficial to have narratives centering the experiences of homeschooled students. Good representation would include both the positives and negatives of homeschooling, and the wide diversity in outcomes and experiences.
We are looking for volunteers to be on the judging committee of the Homeschooled Voices Book Award. Current or former homeschool students are preferred. Throughout 2026, you would help find and read recently published books with homeschooled characters. At the end of the year, you would get to vote to determine the winner. The Homeschool Voices Book Award is a volunteer project, not an official book award. This should not be a large time commitment, but you would have to try to keep participating throughout the year. If this interests you, and you wouldn’t mind a little extra reading to do for fun, please fill out the application. Thank you!
